The bad news : as a result of an annual heating system inspection, the technician determined that one of my furnaces had a crack in it and needs to be replaced. This one is original to the house and the spring air conditioner inspector suspected that this might be the case. The other 2 furnaces have been replaced in the last several years. The technician estimated the approximate cost to be $2500.
The excellent news : this is covered by my home warranty. All I have to pay "out of pocket" is approx $300 to cover a few non-covered accessories.
The home warranty has paid for itself several times over.
